China market: TechFaith and Dmagicmobile co-develop high-end Barbie handsets
China-based handset solution provider Techfaith Wireless Communication Technology and D Magic Mobile (Shanghai) (Dmagicmobile) have announced a strategic cooperation to develop a licensed high-end handset under the Barbie brand in China.
Barbie's famous face has made the doll a worldwide fashion icon and a global brand powerhouse, according to the companies. The development partnership announced by Dmagicmobile and TechFaith plans to capitalize on the Barbie fiftieth Anniversary to deliver the first high-end customized Barbie handset to the market.
Defu Dong, TechFaith chairman and CEO, said, "In order to enter the high-end handset market, our objective is to develop a high-end handset with a market price above RMB10,000 (US$1,463). The luxury market in China continues to grow in sophistication, even during tough economic times. Consumers in China show a strong desire for luxury products and have an appreciation for significant luxury brands. Barbie is an internationally famous brand celebrating its fiftieth anniversary, making 2009 the perfect time to launch the first customized Barbie phone. Designed for women, the new Barbie phone's superior technology will be encased in an elegant exterior."
The Barbie handset is currently in development and is expected to be launched in the third quarter of 2009.
