MediaTek to supply smartphone IC solutions for white-box vendors in China in 3Q09
MediaTek, following its offering of TD-SCDMA and WCDMA 3G base-band and radio-frequency handset ICs, will begin volume production of smartphone IC solutions for white-box handsets in China in the third quarter of 2009, according to industry sources in Taiwan.
MediaTek-designed smartphone ICs will support WVGA resolution and feature integrated GPS, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi functions as well as various video codecs to support multiple mobile TV standards including DVB-T, DVB-H and China-developed CMMB.
The average selling price (ASP) of smartphones is expected to drop following the penetration of MediaTek's smartphone IC solutions, which will come as an impact on the high-end smartphone market as well as smartphone makers such as High Tech Computer (HTC), commented the sources.
HTC is one of MediaTek's customers of smartphone IC solutions, but white-box smartphones will be MediaTek's major sources of orders, according to the sources.
