United Way of Greenville County awarded $100,000 AT&T grant Supports "Graduate Greenville"
The AT&T Foundation, the philanthropy arm of AT&T*, announced it has awarded a $100,000 grant to the United Way of Greenville County, the fiscal agent for Graduate Greenville, a recognized, best practice program aimed at improving high school success. Specifically the grant will be used to add a technology component to the Summer Enrichment Program designed to help students improve their math and literacy skills.
Graduate Greenville, is a partnership with United Way of Greenville County, Greenville County Schools, and the Alliance of Education and was created to address increasing the high school graduation rate in Greenville County. The program targets moderately at-risk students making the transition from middle school to their 9th grade year at high school. The program helps students gain the motivation; self-confidence and academic foundation that allows continued high school success and on-time graduation.
"If Greenville County is to be competitive with communities across the nation, we need well educated young people graduating from high school prepared to compete in the global workforce. I am encouraged by the four point increase in our local graduation rate, and believe that innovative public/private partnerships like this one between Greenville County Schools, The Alliance for Quality Education, and United Way of Greenville County is a model program for continued improvement and one to consider statewide. Graduate Greenville actually started in my Senate District, at Berea High School. The early results at Berea, Greenville and Greer High Schools are very promising and I am pleased that the program will expand to two additional schools next year. We are extremely grateful to AT&T for recognizing the importance of this effort and lending their support to help the youth of Greenville County achieve their potential and realize their dreams", said state Senator Mike Fair (R) District 6, Greenville County.
"In order to improve our high school graduation rate, our entire community has to take part in the effort. Graduate Greenville is a community partnership between the School District, the United Way, the Alliance for Quality Education, and many volunteers to work with individual students to help them succeed in high school.
We greatly appreciate AT&T joining in this community effort. We will succeed as a community only if our young people succeed in high school", said Attorney Frank Holleman, former U S Deputy Secretary of Education, and chair of the boards of The Alliance for Quality Education and Graduate Greenville.
Pamela P Lackey, president AT&T-South Carolina said, "Our vision of connecting people helps shape our role as a corporate citizen. For us, corporate citizenship begins by supporting the communities where we live and work. We believe investing in a well-educated workforce may be the single most important thing we can do to help America remain the leader in a digital, global economy. I commend Graduate Greenville for this innovative partnership".
