ITRI and Datang Telecom to jointly set up a TD-SCDMA experimental network in Taiwan

Taiwan government-backed Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) has signed an MOU (memorandum of understanding) with China-based Datang Telecom Technology to set up an experimental TD-SCDMA network in Taiwan.

The planned experimental network will serve as a testing network to verify TD-SCDMA-compatible CPE products rolled out by Taiwan network equipment, so as to help local makers cut their time-to-market and costs for mobile devices designated for the China market, according to ITRI president Johnsee Lee.

ITRI and Datang will also join forces to develop TD-LTE (time division-Long Term Evolution) technology, Lee added.

The TD-LTE standard is being promoted by a number of China-based telecom equipment makers, including ZTE, Huawei Technologies, Datang and China Putian Information Technology, said market sources in China, adding that many players such as Motorola, Nokia, Alcatel-Lucent, LG Electronics (LGE) and Qualcomm have also climbed on the TD-LTE bandwagon.
