Taiwan market: More competition expected in CDMA handset segment in 2010
A number of handset vendors plan to strengthen their deployments of CDMA handsets in the Taiwan market in 2010 even though sales of CDMA handsets currently account for only a 15% of the local handset market, according to market sources.
Asia Pacific Broadband Telecom (APBT) is currently the sole CDMA network operator in Taiwan, and sales of CDMA handsets in the local market reach about 80,000-90,000 units a month, the sources indicated.
Among branded vendors, LG Electronics (LGE) aims to unseat rival Samsung Electronics and become the top vendor of CDMA handsets in the local market, LGE Taiwan has revealed.
Samsung and Nokia had long been the top-two vendors of CDMA handsets in the local market. However, LGE managed to outperform Nokia and took, for the first time, the second ranking position in the CDMA segment in November 2009.
To fulfill its goal, LGE plans to launch entry-level and mid-range CDMA handsets exclusively for the Taiwan market in 2010, according to a Chinese-language Commercial Times report.
Taiwan-based Inventec Appliances has teamed up with APBT to promote its CDMA models, pushing the company to the fourth-ranked vendor in the segment in November, said market sources.
China-based Beijing Tainyu Communication Equipment, also in cooperation with APBT, has begun selling its K-Touch branded CDMA handsets in the local market.
APBT plans to bring in more CDMA models by expanding its cooperation with other China-based vendors, including ZTE, Huawei Technologies and Yulong Computer Technology, noted the sources.
