GaAs foundry AWSC to benefit from Nokia shifting orders to Skyworks
Nokia will reportedly switch 30% of its power amplifier (PA) orders from RFMD to Skyworks in 2010 - a move which will benefit Taiwan-based GaAs foundry Advanced Wireless Semiconductor Company (AWSC), the contract production partner for Skyworks, according to market sources.
Skyworks is likely to receive orders for 600 million PAs from Nokia, the sources indicated. Nokia's handset shipments for 2010 are expected to reach 400-500 million units, with each handset adopting 4-6 PAs on average, added the sources.
Skyworks will outsource the orders to AWSC since it is already running at full utilization, the sources noted. The company did not add capacity in 2009 due to financial concerns.
AWSC is expanding 6-inch capacity and will be able to take new orders starting from the middle of first-quarter 2010, said the sources. The capacity expansion is expected to be completed by the end of second-quarter 2010.
