Taiwan market: Smartphones account for 25% of handset market
Smartphones accounted for 25% of total handsets sold in the Taiwan market in May 2010, up from 12% in 2008 and 15% in 2009, according to Chang Yung-hung, president of Synnex Technology International. In terms of sales value, smartphone's market share topped 50%, he said. In comparison, the market consensus for smartphone's global market share in 2010 ranges from 18-20%.
Development of the Taiwan's smartphone segment has been a gradual process, but demand for the converged devices have picked up substantially since entering 2010. The three largest telecom carriers, Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone, each launched five to ten smartphones in the first half with heavy promotions.
Models priced between NT$10,000-15,000 (US$312-468) are seeing the strongest growth, according to sources from Taiwan-based smartphone vendor HTC. With subsidies from carriers, some of the premium models such as the iPhone and HTC Desire have entered this segment range as well.
