Mobile World Congress Event Round-up
IPX showcased Trusted Service Manager and saw increased appetite for PSMS vending and direct billing at the world’s premier mobile event.
Mobile World Congress is seen as the international mobile telecom event with nearly 1,400 companies spread out across eight halls at La Fira in Barcelona. Over just four days, the show attracted 60,300 attendees from more than 200 countries with 51% C-level representation.
IPX was, as always, present and this year with a greater presence than ever before. Many interesting customer meetings were held in Ericsson’s Hall 6, where we also showcased our Trusted Service Manager (TSM) which was very well received. Like last year, we also had a vending machine to demonstrate the potential of vending using mobile payment. In 2010, the concept was of huge interest for vending companies and operators, however, this year everyone seemed to be in agreement that vending using operator billing shows huge promise. One thing that became increasingly apparent this year is the willingness of operators to discuss new business models for ticketing, physical goods and more.
MWC 2011 was very positive. There is a great deal of change in our industry and many other global payment aggregators are changing their offers and services. IPX has remained committed to providing global payment aggregation and the demand for these services continues to increase. For the most part, 2010 was tough for the industry but now many players have found a more stable environment to provide services and for many, volumes are picking up.
One particularly hot topic at MWC was Direct billing which IPX launched globally in 2009. Application stores, internet companies and any content provider wanting to offer services to the growing segment of smartphones all need various forms of direct billing, including in-application billing which IPX can provide in several markets.
To top things off MWC devoted a whole day session to mobile money, NFC and Ericsson’s networked society.
