Ericsson CEO receives digital health for digital development award

Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg honored at inaugural South-South Awards Ceremony
Digital Health for Digital Development is theme of 2011 awards
Ericsson recognized for outstanding use of mobile broadband for digital health
Hans Vestberg, President and CEO of Ericsson, was among the winners of the first South-South Awards. This new award recognizes governments, organizations and individuals who have made crucial contributions through the use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals.

"Mr. Hans Vestberg's leadership in utilizing mobile technology as a development tool for the global south is key to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. It is our privilege and honor to award Mr. Vestberg the 2011 South-South Award for his contribution to broadband communications," said Ambassador Francis Lorenzo, President of South-South News and Chairman of South-South Awards.

Mr. Vestberg was honored for being a leading advocate for the potential of mobility and broadband to tackle some of the world’s most compelling issues, such as health, poverty, education and climate change.

Since 2009, Mr. Vestberg has served on the advisory board for the Digital Health Initiative. He is a member of the UN Broadband Commission for Digital Development, where he chairs the climate-change working group. Ericsson is also a founding member of Connect to Learn, an initiative which aims to provide universal access to quality 21st century secondary education around the world.

The 2011 South-South Awards were presented in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, and the Permanent Mission of Antigua and Barbuda to the United Nations.
