Nokia Siemens Networks’ spectrum re-farming provides dual benefit to BFKT

Nokia Siemens Networks delivered spectrum re-farming to BFKT for CDMA services
BFKT uses recycled CDMA spectrum to expand HSPA network

Nokia Siemens Networks has provided spectrum re-farming services to BFKT, a True Group subsidiary in Thailand. This has enabled the operator to shift CDMA voice traffic onto different frequencies. Spectrum re-farming has also allowed BFKT to re-use spectrum previously allocated to CDMA services, to build its HSPA* mobile broadband network in the 800 MHz frequency band. Nokia Siemens Networks ensured that the HSPA network was built without any impact on the spectral efficiency and service quality being offered to BFKT’s CDMA subscribers.

The spectrum re-farming services provided to BFKT included network planning, hardware transition, database management as well as network reconfiguration and performance monitoring. These services were delivered in two phases with the first phase covering Bangkok city and the second spanning the West, Central and East regions of Thailand.

Nokia Siemens Networks’ network planning and optimization and operations teams completed the overall re-farming ahead of schedule in order to make the spectrum available for the operator’s HSPA expansion.

“**BFKT has been able to considerably reduce its capital and operational costs by reusing the 800 MHz spectrum for HSPA network expansion,” said Krittika Mahattanakul, head of Asia north sub-region at Nokia Siemens Networks. “Today, spectrum availability and its reuse are critical in meeting the ever increasing demand for new services. Since we are the leader in low band WCDMA (800 and 900 MHz)* with the highest number of low band WCDMA re-farming reference cases, we were the obvious choice to efficiently address the operator’s requirement.”

Nokia Siemens Networks is committed to supporting CDMA operators in developing their business and enabling them to efficiently evolve their network operations towards long term evolution (LTE). Today, many CDMA operators worldwide have started to evolve their networks with the goal of converging on a common LTE/4G mobile broadband standard.
